Genesis Worksheet - Chapter 17

Genesis Chapter 17

13 Years had passed since Ishmael's birth to Abram & Hagar.

1.  How old is Abram when the Lord appears to him again? vs. 1 -

The Lord said to him:

"I am God Almighty (El Shaddai); Walk before Me, and be blameless."

2.  What in turn would God do for Abram? vs. 2 - 4

  • 1)
  • 2)
  • 3)

God changed Abram's name to Abraham.  This was God putting His personal name "Yah" into Abram's name.

3. In thinking of the covenant that is made when we come to Christ through the New Covenant of His blood, how does the personality of God become a part of our very being?

  • John 14:16-17 -
  • John 15:5 -
  • John 17:25-26 -
  • Romans 8:15 -17 -
  • Galatians 2:20 -

4. At this time when God changed Abram's name to Abraham, what did He also do for Sarai's name? vs. 15 -

Once again, the 'yah' is placed within her name showing that they are 'one' and they are both in covenant with God and His promises to them.

5.  What would God do in His covenant with Abraham? vs. 6 -

  • 1)
  • 2)
  • 3)

6.  How long would this covenant last between Abraham & his descendants after him? vs. 7 -

*Interesting Note:  The Old Covenant of the Law was not given to Moses until 430 years after this ... and it was not an everlasting covenant but was replaced by the New Covenant of the Blood of Jesus as taught clearly in the New Testament.

The Abrahamic Covenant is the Covenant that continued as the everlasting covenant of 'faith' and we continue to be part of Abraham's 'seed' and 'inheritance' in Christ.

7. Write out the Scriptures below to support this:

  • Galatians 3:6-9 -
  • Galatians 3:16-18 -
  • Galatians 3:26-29 -

8.  What was included in the Abrahamic covenant to the descendants of Abraham forever? vs. 8 -

Does this help you understand the orthodox Jews and their love for their land and their zeal to continue to possess the land that was promised to them by God?

9.  What was Abraham's part of the covenant?  vs. 9 -

10.  What does a life of 'faith' in God's covenant bring from us as well?

Comment on these verses:

  • Romans 16:26 -
  • James 2:22-23 -
  • John 15:8 -
  • 1 John 5:2-3 -

Abraham was given a "sign" of God's covenant in his "flesh" and it was passed on to every male to show an "outward" sign of their belonging to Him by covenant.

11.  When were the males to be circumcised?  vs. 12 -

  • Who else would be required to be circumcised with Abraham? vs. 12-13
  • What was the consequence of any male refusing circumcision? vs. 14 -

12.  Did circumcision continue to be a requirement under the New Covenant of Grace?

  • Galatians 5:6 -

13.  How is a believer circumcised in the flesh through Christ?  What is "cut away" from us in Him?  What is the outward sign of the inward transformation by faith?

  • Colossians 2:9-14-
  • Romans 6:1-11 -

 Conclusion from Genesis 17:

14.  What was Sarai's name changed to in the covenant God made with she and Abraham? vs. 15 -

What would God do for Sarah? vs. 16 -

  • 1)
  • 2)
  • 3)
  • 4)

15.  How did Abraham respond when he heard that God would do this through their aged bodies that were past child bearing years? vs. 17 -

  • What did Abraham believe these 13 years since Hagar gave birth to Ishmael? vs. 18 -

16.  Yet God's plan would go forward.

  • Who would the covenant be carried through by God's promise in God's timing? vs. 19, 21 -

17.  What would God do for Abraham's son Ishmael? vs. 20 -

18. God went up from talking to Abraham.

  • What did Abraham do to obey what God had told him to do with the males in his household? vs. 23-
  • How old was Abraham when he and his son Ishmael were circumcised? vs.24-26 -

Abraham is now 99 years of age.  It has been 24 long years since God first called him to leave his country and go to a land of promise and that he would bless him as a great nation.  Ishmael was his and Sarah's idea of how God must want to fulfill the plan, but now the Lord has revealed to him, it will be through Sarah his wife and through his son, Issac.

God is not slow to keep His promises.

  • Have you been waiting for years for something you have believed Him for?

Nothing is impossible with God.
