Geneology of Jesus through Joseph (Matthew 1:1-17)His geneology through Mary is given in Luke's account

1. As you read through the geneology of Jesus given, who are some names that you recognize from the Bible?  Try to find at least 5 names you recognize in His genealogy and tell why one or more is signficant to his lineage.

2. What is Jesus called in verse 17 and what does this mean?  Use a Bible dictionary if you need to find out.

Conception and Birth of Jesus

1. When was Mary found to be pregnant with Jesus? (v.18)

2. Joseph considered putting her away so she would not be disgraced.  Before he did that, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.  What did he tell Joseph? (vs.20)

3.  What was Joseph to name the boy and why? (vs. 21)

4. What prophecy was told in the Old Testament that this fulfilled? (vs.22-23)

5.  What does the name Immanuel mean? (vs.23)

6. When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel had commanded him and took Mary for his wife.  What did he do until after the birth of Jesus concerning Mary? (vs. 25)

7. Why is it so important to believe that Jesus was born of a virgin?  What does this tell us about His birth and who He is to us?

8.  How does today's commentary on the geneology of Jesus help you understand His origin and purpose for us?
