Genesis Chapter 13

Abram was forced to leave Egypt after Pharaoh found out he had lied to him about his wife Sarai. He went right back to his starting place in the Negev.

1.  How did Abram fare financially? vs. 2 -

 

2. Abram returned to the altar he had formerly made between Bethel and Ai. 

• What did he do there? vs. 4-

3. What possessions did Lot, Abram's nephew, have? vs. 5 -

Because Abram and Lot's possessions were so great, the land could not sustain them if they remained together.

4. What happened between Abram and Lot's herdsmen? vs. 7 -

5. Who were living in this land at the time? vs. 7 -

6. Abram did not want strife with Lot. 

• Although Abram had the 'rights' to the land because God had promised it to him - what did he allow Lot to do? vs. 9-11 -

7. What teaching does Paul give in the New Testament that corresponds to this attitude that believers should have?

• 1 Corinthians 9:1-12 - (List the things Paul had a 'right' to as an apostle of Christ) -
• Why did he not use all the 'rights' he had? 
• What was the higher purpose he had in his heart? vs. 12 -

There are times that we give up what is rightfully ours for the sake of others. Lot was glad to take advantage of Abram's offer to him.  He chose "all the plain of Jordan that was well watered" and left the hills for Abram.

Lot departed "toward Sodom" (Genesis 13:12).  Lot chose for himself what 'looked' best, but his choice was not the wisest.  In the coming days of God's judgment upon the land of Sodom, it would only be the hand of God's divine intervention to help Lot escape disaster and destruction. (will read in Genesis 19:15-17).  All his possessions will be destroyed in that day.

12. After Lot left Abram, the Lord appeared to Abram. 

• Summarize God's words to Abram in verses 14 - 17 -

13. After this, Abram moved his tent and came to dwell by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron. 

• What did Abram do when he made camp there?  vs. 18 -

This is a repeated pattern we see in Abram's life.  Worship !  \o/

What can we do to end 'strife' between us and our family members or fellow Christians, neighbors, etc.
