The Visit of the Magi (vs.1-12)
1. Look up in a Bible dictionary and explain who the magi were in this portion of Scripture.
2. What did the magi see that gave them the knowledge that the King of the Jews had been born? vs. 1,2
3. Who did Herod ask concerning where the Messiah was to be born? vs. 4
4. What did they tell him according to the Old Testament Scriptures ? vs. 5,6
5. Herod secretly investigated from the magi the exact time the star had appeared. What did he pretend he would do if the child was found? vs. 8
6. Where did the star guide the magi to and how did they respond? vs. 9 - 11
7. Why didn't the magi retun to Herod? vs. 12
(obviously he would not have worshiped the child but have killed him as we are shown in the next section of Scripture)
The Flight to Egypt (vs.13-15)
1. What was Joseph warned to do in a dream and why? vs.13
2. How long did they remain there and what prophecy from the Old Testament did this fulfill regarding the promised Messiah?vs.14-15
Herod Slaughters Babies (vs.16-23)
1. What did Herod do when he found out that the magi had tricked him and not told him where to find the Christ child? v.16
2. What Old Testament prophecy did this fulfill? vs. 17-18
3. When did Joseph return with Mary and Jesus to the land of Israel? How did he know it was safe to do so? vs.19 - 21
4. Where did they settle out to raise the Christ child and what prophecy from the Old Testament did this fulfill? vs. 22 - 23
Application:
The magi brought gifts to the Christ child to worship Him as the Lord of all. What gifts can we offer him in worship? Do you know your spiritual gift? If so, how are you using it to serve Christ and others?
