Matthew Worksheet - Chapter 17

Matthew Chapter 17

The Transfiguration

Matthew 16:28 says:  "Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who shall not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom."..... (there were no chapter breaks in the original text, but one writing)...it continues in

Matthew 17:1 .. And six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and brought them up to a high mountain by themselves.

And He was transfigured before them.

These 3 saw Him in His glory, the glory He would have in His resurrected form in His kingdom to come.

Jesus touched them and told them not to be afraid.  When they lifted their eyes, they no longer saw Moses and Elijah, but Jesus alone.

God the Father is telling these 3 close disciples of Jesus that it is no longer Moses (who represented the Old Covenant of Law) or Elijah (who represented the prophets of old) who they are to adhere to, but they are to listen to Jesus, His Beloved Son.

Soon they would find out that He would bring in the New Covenant of His blood and the New Covenant would be that Jesus did not abolish the law and prophets but He would fulfill everything the prophets proclaimed and the law required.  Jesus was the new and living way to worship God.

As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus told them not to tell anyone the vision until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

A disciple asked Jesus "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

Who did the disciples realize that Jesus was referring to? vs. 13 -

The Demoniac

When they came to the multitude, a man came to Jesus asking that He heal his son who was a lunatic.  He often fell into the fire and into the water.  He had already taken him to the Lord's disciples and they had not been able to help him.

The Tribute Money

13.  When they came to Capernaum, the tax collector asked Peter if Jesus paid His tax.  Jesus did not want to offend anyone, so He paid the tax, and He paid Peter's too!  How was the money provided? (vs. 27)

Have a need today?  Remember He will provide and sometimes in the most unusual way.  Been fishing lately?  (smile)
