The Plot to Kill Jesus - vs.1-5

1.  Jesus told His disciples that after two days the Passover would be there and then the Son of Man would be delivered up for crucifixion. 

  • During this time, what were the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered at? 
  • What were they plotting to do?
  •  Why were they going to wait until after the festival of Passover?

The Precious Ointment - vs. 6-13

Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper.  A woman came to Jesus with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume.  She poured it upon Jesus' head as He reclined at the table.

2.  How did the disciples react to this? vs. 8,9 -

3.  The Lord does not always think as we do.  What was His reaction to her deed? vs. 10-13 -

Judas' Bargain - vs. 14 - 16

The Last Passover - vs. 17-25

8.  The disciples prepared the Passover meal.  Jesus prophesied that one of them would betray Him.  What was their reaction?  vs. 22 -

The Lord's Supper Instituted - vs. 26-30

10.  While they were eating, Jesus took some bread and after blessing it, what did He tell them the bread represented? vs. 26 -

11.  What did He tell them the wine they drank represented and the result of that? vs. 27-28 -

12.  When would Jesus drink wine with them again? vs. 29 -

They sang a hymn and then went out to the Mount of Olives...

The Disciples Are Warned

13.  What did Jesus prophesy to His disciples? vs. 31 -

He said after He raised from the dead, He would go before them to Galilee.  His hand was not going to let go of them although He knew in advance they would fail Him in his darkest hours.  Isn't that comforting to note?

14.  What bold statement did Peter make concerning this? vs. 33 -

15.  How did Jesus repond back to Peter? vs. 34 -

Still Peter and the other disciples said they would die with Jesus if need be and they would never deny Him.

The Garden of Gethsemane

16.  Jesus went to a place called Gethsemane to pray.  He told His disciples to wait for Him and pray.  He took three deeper into the garden with Him.  What three was this? vs. 27-    1)        2)        3)

17.  What did Jesus tell them? vs. 38 -

18.  He needed these 3 close friends to stand with Him through this time.  What was He asking them to do for Him? vs. 40-41 -

19.  Jesus found them sleeping.  He told them the spirit of man is willing, but what is the flesh? vs. 41 -

20.  Jesus asked the Father a second time if it was possible to take the cup of suffering away from Him.  He came back to check on His friends, His disciples.  What were they doing again? vs. 43 -

21.  What kind of praying did Jesus do when He was in the garden?

Note:  If you are like me, that will change the image of how He looked in the garden of Gethsemane forever in your mind.  He was not looking pretty with his hands folded nicely on a rock, was He?

22.  Jesus went away yet a 3rd time and prayed the same things fervently to the Father.  What did He say to His disciples when He came again and found them still sleeping? vs. 45-46 -

Jesus' Betrayal and Arrest

While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of His twelve that had followed Him and witnessed His life and miracles for 3 years, came up with a great multitude carrying swords and spears.

23.  How did His 'friend' Judas show the authorities which one He was? vs. 49 -

24.  What was Jesus' reaction to him? vs. 50 -

25.  What did one of His disciples do at that time as well? vs. 51 -

In John's Gospel, we are told that this is Peter that did this. (John 18:10)

27.  Jesus was not going to fight with swords.  He was submitting to the Father's will.  He did have confidence, however, that the Father would send angels if He asked for help.  What did He say in verse 53 ?

He knew, however, that the Scriptures must be fulfilled.  He would willingly lay down His life to please the Father and to save us from our sins. (vs.56)

28.  What did all the disciples do at this time? vs. 56 -

Jesus Before Caiaphas

29.  Jesus was taken to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together.  What was Peter doing? vs. 58 -

30.  They were trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus so they could put Him to death.  They finally got two men to state an accusation.  What was it? vs. 61 -

31.  Jesus was silent as they made charges.  The high priest asked Him, "Are you the Christ - the Son of God?"  Jesus answered him with wisdom.  What did He say? vs. 64 -

32.  What was the reaction of the high priest? vs. 65 -

33.  The chief priests and the council said "He is deserving of death!"  What did they do to Him at that time? vs.67-68 -

Application:

36.  After looking over this lesson, write out the differences between the heart of Judas who betrayed Jesus for money and the heart of Peter who did not want to deny Him, but in the weakness of his flesh, he did....
