Matthew Worksheet - Chapter 4

Matthew Chapter 4

The Temptation of Jesus

1.  Who led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil? vs. 1

2.  How long was He there fasting in the wilderness before He became hungry and able to tempt? vs. 2

3.  The tempter came to Him in his hunger and tried to cause Him to doubt His relationship to the Father.  "If You are the Son of God ....."  What did the tempter tell Him He could do to satisfy His hunger? vs. 3

4.  How did Jesus resist the temptation? vs. 4

5.  The devil then took Jesus into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple.  Once again he tried to cause Him to doubt His relationship to the Father.  "If You are the Son of God...." What did the devil say He could do and still be safe?  What did the devil 'use' on Jesus as a deceptive tool?  vs. 6

6.  How did Jesus resist this temptation? vs. 7

7.  Again, the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.  The devil offered all these to Him if He would only fall down and worship him.  Do you think the devil can give you things of the world for such an exchange?  If you know Scripture to back your answer, please give it and type it out.

8.  How did Jesus resist this temptation? vs. 9

9.  Finally the devil left Him.  Who came along to minister to Him at that time? vs. 11

Application:

Do you know the Word of God well enough to battle the temptations you face from the tempter?  Has he ever caused you to doubt your relationship to the Father by making you think the Father didn't care for your basic needs?  How did you handle it?  How would you like to handle it each time?  What must you do to get ready?

Jesus Begins His Ministry

1.  Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been taken into custody (put into prison) and He withdrew into Galilee.  Leaving Nazareth, where did He finally settle? (give full description from vs.13)

2.  What Old Testament prophecy does this fulfill? (vs.14-16 - type it out)

3.  What were the people sitting in according to the prophecy?  What would they see when they saw Jesus there?  What was your life like before you saw the light of your Lord?

4.  What did Jesus began to preach from that time on?  vs. 17

The First Disciples

1.  Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee.  Who were the two brothers that were fisherman that He called to follow Him?  vs. 18

2.  What did Jesus say they would be fishing for from that point on? vs. 19

3.  These immediately followed Him.  Going on, He saw two other brothers who were also fishermen.  They were with their father Zebedee mending their nets when Jesus called them to follow Him.  What were their names? vs. 21

4.  What did they do in response to His call? vs. 22

5.  What have you left in order to follow Him?  Many continue in their same occupations, but some are called to change jobs and some are called to leave family or location.  What changed when you chose to follow your Lord's call?

Ministry in Galilee

1.  Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.

The news spread throughout all Syria.  Who did they bring to Him and what did He do for them?  s. 24

2. Where were the crowds that followed Him all coming from?  Check out a Bible map online to see if you can find all these places. vs. 25
