Matthew Worksheet - Chapter 18

Matthew Chapter 18

Rank in the Kingdom

1. The disciples asked Jesus "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"  Who did Jesus say we must be like? vs. 2-3 -

Stumbling Blocks

2. What warning does Jesus give concerning these in vs. 5-10 ?

According to verse 10 of this chapter, the children have their own angels in heaven who continually behold the face of the Father.  What a comfort we have in knowing that!

3. How serious does Jesus want us to be about things that cause our eyes or hands to stumble and sin? vs. 7-9

4. How do you think we could 'cut' things away from our lives to help us not look or touch things that make us stumble?

Ninety-nine Plus One

5. What is Jesus teaching us in the example of a Shepherd and sheep? vs. 12 - 14

Discipline and Prayer

Matthew 18:15-17 teaches the church how to discipline a brother who stumbles in a manner of godliness and love.  The goal is to restore him to fellowship with the Lord and the church.

6. If your fellow Christian sins, list below the 3 steps to take in the proper order:

1)

If he doesn't listen to you....

2)

If he refuses to listen to them....

3)

7. If he still refuses to listen, then what are you to do? vs. 17 -

Note:  It isn't Scriptural to tell others about the sin before confronting this person in private.  We are not to use the facade of 'please pray for this brother or sister' to another.

Discipline and Prayer

8. If two believers agree on earth about something they are asking God for, what can they believe will happen? vs. 19 -

The 'agreement' is understood that it is in line with God's nature and in agreement with His will.  Amen.

9. When 2 or 3 believers are gathered together in the Name of Jesus, Who is right there with them? vs. 20 -

Forgiveness

10. Peter must have felt good about himself when he said "Should I forgive my brother 7 times?" ... but he must have felt humbled by our Lord's answer.  What did Jesus tell him? vs. 22 -

11. Do you think this figure is to be taken literally?  Why or why not?

Forgiveness is not so much an act as it is an attitude.  If you were to keep track of 490 times and then execute judgment..had you truly forgiven to begin with?

We cannot love or forgive apart from Christ, but as we allow ourselves to be consumed with Him, the fruit of His Spirit within us will love and forgive others as He loves and forgives us.

Read the Parable in Matthew 18:23-33.

12. A King is settling accounts with his slave.  One slave was brought to him that owed 10,000 talents (a talent was worth more than 15 years' wages of a laborer).  Since he could not pay this, what did the King command him to do? vs. 25 -

13. The slave fell down and prostrated himself and asked for mercy.  What did the King do for him? vs. 27 -

1)      2)      3)

This, of course, is what King Jesus did for us when we could not pay our great debt of sins.

.....But the slave went out to a 'fellow slave' who owed him only "one day's wage" and demanded to be paid back.  His fellow slave fell down and asked him for mercy.

14. What did he do ? vs. 30 -

The other slaves saw this and reported it to the King.  The King asked the slave "Should you not have mercy on your fellow slave, even as I had mercy on you?"

15. What did the King do to this unforgiving slave? vs. 34 -

16. Read verse 35 with a godly fear.  Write the verse out below:
