Matthew Worksheet - Chapter 5

Matthew Chapter 5 - The Sermon on the Mount

The Beatitudes

When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.

He taught them these blessings or beatitudes.

Name the blessings below and what is received from them:

1. vs. 3 - Blessed are:

2. vs. 4 - Blessed are:

3. vs. 5 - Blessed are:

4. vs. 6 - Blessed are:

5. vs. 7 - Blessed are:

6. vs. 8 - Blessed are:

7. vs. 9 - Blessed are:

8. vs. 10 - Blessed are:

9. vs. 11 - Blessed are:

10.  Why should you rejoice and be glad if you are persecuted for Christ? vs. 12

Disciples and the World

1.  Disciples of Jesus are called salt of the earth.  What function does salt have and how do you think it relates to how we are used by the Lord in the world?

2.  Disciples of Jesus are also called the light of the world.  When we light a lamp, the purpose is to give light to all who come in the house.  We would never hide the light.  How can we let our light shine before others so that they can glorify our Father in heaven? vs. 16

3.  Jesus did not come to abolish the law and the prophets, but to fulfill them.  He was perfect in everyway and fulfilled the law of God to perfection.  He came to fulfill every Old Testament prophecy that spoke of His coming and His purpose.  What must our righteousness surpass in order to enter heaven?  vs. 20

4.  What do you think the Pharisees and scribes based their righteousness on?  What must we base our righteousness on in order to enter heaven?  Knowing this is critical to eternal life.  Support your answers with Scriptures you find.

Personal Relationships

Have you kept the commandments of God?  If we think we have, we need to think again.

1.  What does Jesus say is equivalent to murder in the eyes of God? vs. 21,22

2.  What are we to do before we present an offering at the altar to God? vs. 23 - 26

3.  What does Jesus say is equivalent to committing adultery? vs. 27 - 28

4.  How serious is Jesus about our need to not lust in sexual ways with our eyes or our body parts?  What does He say we are to do if our eye or our hand makes us stumble and sin? vs. 29 - 30

5.  How could this be made applicable in our modern day of magazines, books, movies, internet, and music?  What should we do about it if it makes us stumble in this way; if we do not have the ability to control ourselves?

6.  What is the way out of a marriage that Jesus gives?  When we divorce for any other reason, what are we committing and what do we cause the other person to commit in the eyes of God?  vs. 31-32

7.  Are we to make vows and keep them or simply not make vows at all according to Jesus?  What is enough?  vs. 33 - 37

8.  Jesus did not teach returning evil for evil.  What did he teach instead?  Fill in the following:

vs. 39 - Do not resist an evil person, but whoever slaps you on your right cheek:

vs. 40 - If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have:

vs. 41 - Whoever forces you to go one mile; go

vs. 42 - Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to:

vs. 43,44 - Love your _______ and pray for those who:

9.  Who does God send His sun and rain to? vs. 45

10.  If you love only those who love you, what reward do you have?  If you greet those who greet you, how are you any different from others?  Since God is perfect, what should you strive to be? vs. 48
