Tradition and Commandment

1. What did the scribes and Pharisees accuse Jesus' disciples of in vs.1 & 2?

Note:  After the Babylonian captivity, the Jewish rabbis began to make meticulous rules and regulations governing the daily life of the people.  They were interpretations and applications of the law of Moses, handed down from generation to generation.  In Jesus' ay this "tradition of the elders" was in oral form.  It was not until C. A.D. 200 that it was put into writing in the Mishnah. (Richard Lawrence Bible Handbook)

2. What did Jesus say they did for the sake of their traditions? vs. 3-6 -

Jesus quoted Isaiah's prophecy to them that confirmed the hypocrits they were.

3.  How did they honor God?  Was their heart in it?  Did their worship accomplish anything?  Why not?  vs. 8-9 -

4.  What profound statement did Jesus make regarding this in vs. 11 ?

Jesus was told that the Pharisees were 'offended' by His statement.

The Heart of Man

Peter wanted Jesus to explain the parable of defilement to them.  Jesus said that the things we eat pass through the stomach are are elimated.

6.  According to Jesus, where do the things we 'say' come from and what does it do to us? vs. 18 -

Woman of Faith

Jesus went into the district of Tyre & Sidon.  A Canaanite woman came out from that region and asked Jesus to heal her demon-possessed daughter.

11. Did she give up?

What did she do? vs. 25 -

12. Jesus resisted her plea again.  What did He tell her? vs. 26 -

13. Did she finally give up and go home?

15. What can we learn about our prayer life from this passage?

Healing Multitudes

Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee and up to a mountain to sit.  Great multitudes came to Him.

16. Who did they bring to Him? vs. 30 -

Four Thousand Fed

18. How long did these people stay in His presence without eating? vs. 32 -

Jesus felt compassion for them and He didn't want to send them away hungry.

He took only 7 loaves and a few fish and fed 4000 men plus women and children with them!

19. After they ate and were satisfied, how much was left over? vs. 37 -

Jesus sent away the multitudes and went to the region of Magadan.
