Matthew Worksheet - Chapter 27

Matthew Chapter 27

We have seen Jesus be betrayed by Judas in Chapter 26 and Peter, his faithful follower, has denied knowing Him three times.  He is left alone to face the cruelty of the trials and finally His death.

Judas' Remorse

1.  When morning came, the chief priests & elders bound Jesus.  Where did they take Him to? vs. 2 -

2.  What did Judas do when he saw that Jesus had been condemned to die? vs. 3-5 -

3.  What did the chief priests do with the pieces of silver that Judas no longer wanted?  vs. 6-8 -

4.  What prophecy did this fulfill from the Old Testament? vs. 9-10 -

Jesus Before Pilate

5.  Pilate asked Jesus:  "Are you the King of the Jews?"  How did Jesus answer him? vs. 11 -

6.  What did Jesus do as the chief priests and elders were accusing Him? vs. 12-14 -

At the feast of the Passover, it was a custom for the governor to release one prisoner to the choice of the people.  They were holding at that time a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.  Pilate asked them who they wanted to have released; Barabbas or Jesus the Christ?...He knew that Jesus had been delivered up because of envy. (vs. 18)

7.  What did Herod's wife say to him? vs. 19 -

8.  The chief priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas to be released and for Jesus to be put to death.  Pilate asked what he should do with Jesus?  What did the crowd answer him? vs. 22 -

Pilate said that He had not done any evil that He should die for.  The crowd shouted all the more "Crucify Him!".  Pilate took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd saying that he was innocent of His blood.  He had Jesus scourged and handed Him over to them to be crucified.

9.   What did the Jewish crowd yell out about the blood of the Lord? vs. 25 -

Jesus Is Mocked

Jesus had already been scourged and if any saw The Passion movie, you got a good view of how brutal the scourging was.  They were allowed to give 39 slashes and the cat of 9 tails they used had bits of glass and bone in it with meat hooks that literally shredded the flesh and exposed the inner organs many times.  There are verses in the Old Testament that describe in detail much of the suffering the Lord would undergo through His brutal death.

10.  After this scourging, the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him.  List the 'humiliating' things they did to Him in front of this audience:

Jesus Is Buried

19.  What do we know about the man who prepared Jesus' tomb and His body for burial? vs. 57 - 60

  • His Name:
  • From:
  • Financial Position:
  • His Commitment to Jesus: (vs. 57)

The chief priests and the Pharisees warned Pilate that Jesus had said He would raise from the dead on the third day ... so they did all they could to make sure the grave was secure and guarded so that no one could steal the body and claim that His statement was true.

We know that no one will steal the body, but we also know He will truly do as He said He would!  He will raise from the dead on the third day!  We will read about that tomorrow in chapter 28.

Application:

When Jesus died, the veil in the temple that separated the high priest who was in the presence of God from the people... was ripped ... from top to bottom ... God Himself ripped that curtain that was made out of materials no man could ever rip.

20.  Read the following verses and comment on what this means for us as believers:

  • Hebrews 9:1-14 -
  • Hebrews 10:14-22 -
