Genesis Worksheet - Chapter 16

Genesis Chapter 16

Although God had promised Abram a son, Sarai had not borne him any children as of yet.  It had been 10 years since God had spoken His promise to Abram.

1.  What did Sarai suggest that Abram do to receive a child for them to raise? vs. 2 -

2.  How did Abram respond to her suggestion? vs. 2

3. Hagar, Sarai's maidservant conceived a child for Abram.

  • After she conceived, how did she treat Sarai? vs. 4 -

4. This hurt Sarai.  First, she couldn't conceive the child and now, she was despised by the maid who did conceive one.

  • Who did it seem that Sarai was most upset with? vs. 5 -

5.  What did Abram tell Sarai and what did Sarai do? vs. 6 -

6.  As a result of this mistreatment, what did Hagar, the Egyptian maid, do? vs. 6 -

While Hagar was alone ... pregnant ... and surely afraid in the wilderness ... she must have said a prayer to the God of Abram because verse 11 states that He 'heard' her.  Then the angel of the Lord 'found' her!  He asked her where she came from and where she was going.  She told Him she was fleeing from her mistress, Sarai.

7.  What did the angel of the Lord tell her to do? vs. 9 -

Returning to Abram's house would mean facing humiliation, but that was her true place of physical and spiritual blessing.

8. What did the Angel of the Lord tell her she would receive from her obedience? vs. 10 -

Regardless of how unreasonable it might seem to have to submit to Sarai's cruelty, Hagar was told by God to return and once again take her place in the family for His purposes and plans.

God in His providence often requires His people to endure affliction rather than to escape to an easier way of life.

Is God asking you to remain faithful in an area that seems cruel or unreasonable to you?  Share if you would like to:

Application:

Read these verses in regard to submission to authorities we have been given in life.  Also there are some examples of how Jesus was submissive to the Father.

1 Peter 2:13 - 15

  • What does doing right when being treated wrong accomplish in the life of those who are in error?  vs. 13 - 16

1 Peter 2:17-20

  • Who do you receive favor from if you bear up under unfair treatment for the sake of your conscience before God? vs. 17 - 20

1 Peter 2:21-25

  • Who is our example?  How did He handle threats and insults?  Who did He continue to entrust Himself to?

Because of His obedience, what has He accomplised for us today?

  • 1 Peter 3:1-12

In marriage, how does this example of Christ apply when husbands are not obedient to the Word of God?

  • What will a wife's behavior do for the disobedient husband?
  • Where should a woman put the emphasis of her charm at? vs. 4
  • How are husbands to handle the 'hard to understand' wives? vs. 7 -
  • If a husband does not grant his wife the honor of being a fellow heir of the grace of life, what will happen to his prayers? vs. 8 -

In summary:

  • How are we to walk in all relationships? vs. 8-11 -
  • Whose prayers does God attend to and answer?  vs. 12 -

Back to Genesis 16:

The angel of the Lord went on to tell Hagar a prophetic word concerning the child she was to have.

9.  What was she to name him? vs. 11 -

His name means:  "God hears" .... The Lord had given heed to her affliction.

10.  What would her son's life be like? vs. 12

  • 1)
  • 2)
  • 3)
  • 4)

Away from human settlements, he would roam the desert like a wild donkey.

Record the fulfillment of verse 12 found here:

  • Genesis 25:18 -

Hagar called the name of the Lord who spoke to her:  "The God who sees"

In the Hebrew, this is the name of God:               Elroi

11. What was the well called from then on that she was at when the angel of the Lord spoke to her? vs. 14 -

12. So Hagar returned and born Ishmael to Abram.

  • How old was Abram when Hagar had Ishmael? vs.16 -

Note:  It will still be another 13 years before God will bring the son of promise to Abram and Sarai, but how are they to know?  God gave the promise but not the timetable of the fulfillment.
