6. Where did Abram live when God first called Him out to follow Him to a land unknown?
See Acts 7:2-4
7. Because Abram was willing to follow God with such obedience; to walk by faith and not by sight; what is he remembered for?
See Hebrews 11:8-10
8. See the map of Abraham's travels by clicking here.
Look for the starting point of when God appeared to Him in the Ur of the Chaldeans (Babylon; modern Iraq)...and then when God calls him to leave the land he lives in of Haran to go to the land of Promise (Canaan).
Also see Egypt where Abraham will take a detour as well.

Insight: While Abram's faith was growing, so was his stamina! After walking 600 miles from Ur to Haran, Abram set out at the age of 75 for the land of Canaan - 400 miles away. He later made a 400-mile round trip to Egypt for a total of 1400 miles. Abram was called to forsake his material wealth, advanced civilization, good farming land, friends, and family, and all that is considered 'home' for a 1000-mile plus journey through hostile environments to an unknown land with nothing but a promise awaiting him at the end of the trip.
12. What is the definition of faith?
Read through the definition and all those we have read about in Genesis so far in Hebrews 1:1-10 -
- Is God calling you to step out in the obedience of faith?
- What have you sensed Him asking you to do? Share if you would like to:
When Abram arrived in the plain of Moreh, a place near Shechem (about 30 miles north of Jerusalem), he was faced with the Canaanites who controlled the land. (vs. 6)
13. After this long journey and test of faith, the Lord appears to Abram! (vs.7)
Times of 'refreshing' in the Lord's presence come as we are obedient to walk in faith.
- How do times of refreshing come in our lives? Acts 3:19 -
14. What did the Lord tell Abraham? vs. 7 -
- What did Abraham do in response? vs. 7
15. Abram (Abraham) proceeded another 20 miles to the mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent. Bethel was on the west and Ai was on the east.
What did Abram do at this location as well? vs. 8 -
- 1)
- 2)
Abraham built 'altars' where he had memorable spiritual experiences of hearing from God. Do you keep a prayer journal or have a significant way of remembering what the Lord reveals to you so you can build an altar of thanksgiving along the way? This is something that has blessed my life tremendously.
16. Abram journeyed on toward the Negev (a dry wasteland stretching southward from Beersheba).
- What was in this part of the land at that time? vs. 10 -
Another test of Abram's faith and patience. Didn't God say he would be blessed in this new land he was going to? Now he is faced with a severe famine! Many times on our way to the blessings, we are tried and tested and must lean on the promises of God that we have been given.
17. Because of the famine, where did Abram journey to? vs. 10 -
This trip was really out of their way! (225 miles south of Bethel). We don't have a 'record' of God telling him to go there although we don't know for sure. It would be a place to naturally depend on because Egypt's food supply was plentiful due to the Nile River's water supply there. We don't know that God might not have given water from a rock like He did for Moses and the Hebrew children later in history, but anyway this is the route Abram took.
18. When they got close to Egypt, Abraham became afraid concerning his wife Sarai.
- What did he tell her to do? vs. 11-13 -
Sarai was 65 years old and beautiful.
19. Read verses 14 - 20 and answer these questions:
- What happened to Sarai? vs.15-19 -
- What happened to Abram? vs. 16 -
- What happened to Pharaoh and his household? vs. 17 -
Therefore, Pharaoh knew that Abram had lied about Sarai being his sister and he commanded them to leave.
Surely, Abram must have felt that he had dishonored God, but these trials were used to mature his faith as ours are. God did not give up on him or break His covenant with him.
